CHANGES to the VETERINARY SERVICE ENVIRONMENT in KYNETON

CHANGES to the VETERINARY SERVICE ENVIRONMENT in KYNETON

As many would know, Dr Coghlan's veterinary practice (Kyneton Veterinary Hospital), has ceased operating on his retirement at the end of last week.

We congratulate Dr Leigh Coghlan on his remarkable service to the Kyneton Community over a long period. He has been an excellent colleague in veterinary practice as we have worked together cooperatively to meet the veterinary needs of this and surrounding communities. We wish Leigh and his family all the best in retirement. He will be missed by his clients and by us.

The last few years have been tough in our industry, with great demands and a real and persisting shortage of veterinarians throughout Australia and especially in rural areas.

Rural veterinary practice is very rewarding but also very hard and persistent work.

With the closure of Kyneton Veterinary Hospital we are experiencing a significant increase in demand for appointments as we endeavour to provide essential services to animal owners in Kyneton and surrounding areas. Before this we have already been working at near or above capacity for some time, and we will be doing our best to meet your needs.

We will always do our best to see urgent cases as soon as possible, and there will be inevitable delays. Non-urgent appointments are already booked out up to 2 or 3 weeks in advance.

We hope that clients will be patient as we do our best to meet your needs as promptly as we can. We are actively taking steps to increase capacity, but this will take time and additional veterinarians are always in short supply.

Medication continuation: We want to help as many patients as we can with continuation medications. In doing this we will act under the legal restraints imposed on us, which are many. Some are described below. They are intended to ensure that the welfare of patients is paramount and that drugs are used appropriately

We can only supply prescription medications:
- to bona fide clients with whom we have an established relationship and know their animals and /or enterprise
- for patients whom we have examined and for whom we have made a diagnosis, including information provided by another veterinary practitioner which may assist in making a diagnosis
- in some cases when we have a prior established relationship with a farm enterprise we may be able to provide medications for conditions we have diagnosed previously

This means that in the case of new clients seeking continuing medication for animals we will need to examine the animal and consider any history and tests that may have been done in the past before we can provide ongoing medication, even if the patient may have been on that medication for a long time under the care of another practice. If you have your patient's history, please bring it with you to your appointment or, if you provide authorisation we can request any past history and blood tests to be forwarded to us to assist. If arranging for a history to be forwarded please have it emailed to reception@mcintyrevet.com.au before your appointment.

We will be doing all we can to help you. Please be patient and explain your needs clearly so we can help you. Our staff are already stressed in their efforts to provide the best care in the trying circumstances we face together, and angry impatient responses do not help us to serve you better.
